REVIEW: Butternut Squash #1
Butternut Squash #1Publisher: Speakeasy Comics
Writer: Ramon Perez
Artist: Rob Coughler
I decided to give this title a try this week for no other reason than I wanted to start buying more indy stuff. I think I may have picked the wrong book because I didn't really care for this one. The book is basically a collection of strips featuring three friends that all seem pretty identical to me. There are about a dozen strips that are about coffee and aren't funny anymore after the third time you've read the same joke. I chuckled a few times, but not anymore than I do when I read Family Circus - and I don't like Family Circus.
The artwork is in the style of a modern cartoon, and while it isn't bad, it would fit better with a full 22 page story. But, I am not going to complain much about the artwork since I generally found it to be good. There is also a whole bunch of extras at the end, but since I didn't like the issue I didn't read any of the extras. I won't be buying another issue of this title.
My Verdict: 3/10

Looking forward to some more indie reviews. I haven't been reading comics for long but the Marvel/DC stuff doesn't really appeal to me. I'm interested in checking out the indie side of things but don't know what to take a look at. I enjoy reading your reviews and just might take your advice on any good indie books you read.
Thanks for noticing. I will be doing more indy reviews, and even picking stuff up that I would never normally read. I like Angry Youth Comix, but that comes with a heavy warning (as you probably read). In the future I will try to find some stuff that I can replace some of the superhero titles with. At least one indy book a week, probably more.
Incidentally, I meant to review the new Daredevil this week, but didn't have time. If you are looking for a good read, I highly recommend it. I really enjoyed reading it.
Yeah, I think I'll give Angry Youth Comix a miss. As a primary school teacher, I like to read stuff that I can recommend to my students. A copy of Usagi Yojimbo is getting passed around my class at the moment. I had to choose an issue without any stabbings or decapitation, though. The violence in Usagi is far from graphic but all it would take is one parent to express their concern.
Anyway, if you want to check out something different, give Usagi Yojimbo a go.
Mark,
I am currently reading Don Rosa's "The Life and Times of Uncle Scrooge." I highly recommend that for primary school kids. If you didn't already know about it.
PS - It's also really good for grownups!
